Which Go Pro Should I Buy?

No doubt Go Pro have established themselves as the go to camera for action sports and outdoor adventures. These rugged little cameras can take a beating, get great shots, and they’re even waterproof. This has made them very popular with anyone from snow boarders, motocross riders, and even surfers. This is one of the least expensive ways to get a waterproof camera for these kinds of activities. While there are waterproof housings for DSLR cameras they are very expensive. You could spend $1500+ just on the dive housing for these cameras. The GoPro provides an all in one solution to this problem to get you started taking awesome action shots immediately, but you may be asking yourself “Which go pro should I buy?”. We’re going to answer that question for you.

Today we’re going to review the most popular GoPro models. While all of these cameras are great this article seeks to familiarize you with their features, and to explain them. Not everyone is a tech geek, and they might not fully understand everything that these little beauties have to offer, but we’re here to help you out with that! Let’s take a look at the most popular GoPro models, and who’d want to use them.

GoPro Hero5 Session Review

Which Go Pro Should I Buy

GoPros are already pretty small, but they’ve found a way to make an even more compact camera! What’s even better? While all GoPros have the option of a waterproof housing this one is built in. You’ll never have to bother with putting it in or taking it out of the housing. This tiny, sleek brother to the larger GoPro models also features one button control and even voice commands. This is probably the simplest action camera you could ever dream of. If you want a camera that allows you to press one button or give simple voice commands to start recording then this one is a great choice. If technology and you don’t exactly agree this is the easiest to use GoPro around. If you’d love some action shots, but you need use of both of your hands at all times this is a great option.

You’re also free to use any of the popular GoPro accessories on the market such as sticky mounts, chest mounts, selfie sticks and the like. You might think that a smaller camera would equate to worse video quality, but that’s not the case. The Go Pro Session is still capable of capturing beautiful 4k video and 10mp photos. You can use three shooting modes for the photos as well: single, burst and time lapse. These simple modes can provide you a lot of options for your photography, but not enough for it to be overwhelming to somebody who isn’t particularly tech savvy. All of this is done by pushing the single button on the housing to navigate yourself into the proper shooting mode.

The durable housing is waterproof up to 33 feet which is pretty great! That gives you the freedom to use this camera for basically everything from snowboarding, kayaking, surfing and snorkeling without fear. This camera also features a microphone with wind noise reduction which is extremely helpful. This unit would be excellent to mount on a helmet or someplace where a larger GoPro would be too bulky.

  • Stunning 4K video and 10MP photos in Single, Burst and Time Lapse modes.
  • Durable by design, HERO5 Session is waterproof to 33ft (10m) without a housing.
  • Additional GoPro HERO5 Session Features + Benefits below on item page.
  • A single press of the Shutter button powers the camera on and starts recording automatically.
  • Waterproof up to 33 feet with no housing

Best GoPro For:

  • People who aren’t tech savvy and would benefit from simple controls and voice commands
  • People who need their hands free while filming (fishing, paddling, snorkeling)
  • People who need a small, unobtrusive camera for mounting (helmets, fishing poles, ect.)

Go Pro Hero5 Black Review

The GoPro Hero5 Black is the current, top of the line GoPro camera available. This unit is a little bulkier than the GoPro Session, but it also has some nicer features. The biggest one being the high quality LCD display on the back of the camera. In past GoPro models this was an add on that has to be purchased, but now it’s standard. Which is nice.

This 2 inch LCD display is great for previewing, and even editing your footage all from your GoPro. This is a great new feature, as it’s super disappointing to get home and realize that you didn’t get the shot. Depending on the situation those memories could be lost forever. Not so if you’ve got the Hero5 Black. You can shoot it again, and be confident that your adventures will live on.

Like all GoPro models the Hero5 Black takes stunning 4k video. There’s also some other cool new features in the GoPro camera line like the ability to GPS tag your photos and automatically save them to their cloud service. Which is pretty cool. People lose their GoPros all the time, and a cloud backup means your footage is not lost with it. This is a subscription service though, which is nothing new. There’s all kinds of cloud backup services, but this is the only one that will connect to your GoPro automatically.

While the video capture is the same as the smaller session camera this one does have better photo quality. The Hero5 Black will capture photos at 12mp verses the session’s 10mp. Not a huge difference, but if that’s important to you it’s worth mentioning. Like the session, the Hero5 Black has a built in waterproof housing that is safe to use up to 33 feet so you can play to your heart’s content without worry. In addition you can use it to shoot RAW photographs which can help you get the highest quality photo. This camera certainly has a lot more options for different photography and videos modes than the session does. If you want to have the power to use your GoPro for the most artistic shots then this is probably the one for you.

  • Built-in touch display for easy camera control, shot-framing and playback

Best Go Pro For

Go Pro Hero 4 Silver

If you’re on a budget it’s possible you could get the GoPro Hero4 for a lot cheaper than the newer flashy models. You’ll miss out on some features, but if that’s not important to you then it could be the way to go. This was the first GoPro camera to feature a built in touch display.

While the GoPro Hero4 has a built in touch display like the Hero5, the similarities end there. Unlike the other two camera on the list this older camera does not feature a built in waterproof housing. It comes with the waterproof housing, but it is a separate unit. They work well, but they are a little bulky and not nearly as convenient as the sleeker new models. You also have the possibility that the seals on them will inevitably fail with use. That’s just how things like that work. Eventually they will get weak and deteriorated.

The video quality for the Hero4 Silver is also lacking in comparison to its newer cousins. While the the photo quality seems to be the same the video is 1080p or 720p, which is still fairly high quality mind you, but it’s not 4k. So if you’ve seen those flashy new Hero Black videos, and your hoping this will be the same you’ll most likely be disappointed. Something this camera does have going for it? It comes with the waterproof case, and it’s waterproof up to a whopping 131 feet! If you’re a diver or surfer this could be a solid option for you. It also has some very nice low light setting and after dark options for shooting late night adventures or concerts with low light.

  • Built-in touch display for easy camera control, shot-framing and playback
  • Waterproof up to 131 feet
  • Professional 1080p60 and 720p120 video with 12MP photos at up to 30 frames per second
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support the GoPro App, Smart Remote and more
  • Improved camera control and built-in video trimming lets you create and save short video clips right on your camera
  • Protune™ with SuperView™ delivers cinema-quality capture and advanced manual control for photos and video with the world’s most immersive wide-angle field of view

Best GoPro For

  • Heavy underwater use (Divers or surfers)
  • People who don’t care about having the newest of everything
  • People willing to sacrifice a little video quality for a better price
  • People who want an LCD preview screen and on the go editing
